Fall 2016 issue of Trustee
TRUSTEES IN THE KNOW-LTA has used this tag line for several years now, but I thought it might be time to review what LTA has made available to trustees and how to access some of this material. If you are a new trustee or want to find information you saw posted earlier by LTA, it's available. We use this tag line to emphasize that trustees need to keep current with what is happening in the library world. Your effectiveness as a board member improves with your insight into issues.
Trustees in the Know is the subject line of our email blasts. Those blasts are your reminder to check the website for new and timely material recently posted. Go to: Librarytrustees.org. More on that in a minute.
Trustees in the Know is the sub-title for our Trustee Institutes and the workshops we do regionally around the state and at our presentation at the NYLA Conference. These gatherings of trustees and directors provide networking and sharing opportunities not regularly available. Presenters at these programs offer information on issues which are relevant to trustee education and performance. Attending brings value to you and your board. (Your library needs to have funds available in its budget for your education. Budget time is coming, be sure to include funds on the budget conference line).
Trustees in the Know is also used when inviting you to register for a webinar for trustees, or a special event. Click on the link and participate. They are usually about an hour. You can also review webinars previously presented and archived, on LTA's website.
Keeping "...in the know" by accessing the links provided at the LTA website, will let you search for postings LTA has done over the past five years. Use the Site News tab. The Resources and Links tab has a wealth of material for you to use, including a link to the New York State Library and the new edition of the Handbook for Library Trustees of New York State. Reading back issues of the TRUSTEE is also possible. We have most issues posted since 1999. Our Policy Database on the homepage stores over three thousand policies, submitted by libraries from around the state. If you need a policy, check to see what others have created, to help you with your creation. You can search by system, library, population, budget, type, and category. When you adopt a new policy or update a current one, send it to LTA. That will keep other trustees "...in the know" too.
Use Trustees in the Know to do just that - raise the bar and up your game to be an effective and knowledgeable trustee. You need to be active. LTA is here to facilitate keeping Trustees in the Know.
